Free Scottish Music!

Greetings and Salutations to All my Kith and Kin and All the Ships in Outer Space:

While searching on the Internet for something else, I just discovered a bonanza of Scottish songs you can download into your computer FREE!

Of course, you can also listen to them without putting them permanently on your hard drive.

It's your choice.

Anyway, here are two (02) web sites I discovered, and here's how you save the songs to your hard drive.

The first web site is the Glasgow Phoenix Choir.

The second web site is that of Margaret Donaldson.

At her web site, just click on "Songs", and then you can start downloading.

At the Glasgow Phoenix Choir's web site, it ain't gonna be that simple.

You're going to have to do a little work, in order to find all the songs that are available to be downloaded.

So, click on "RECORDINGS", and then click on either "ALL AVAILABLE RECORDINGS" or "DISCONTINUED RECORDINGS".

Then, you must click on each of the albums.

Not all of the albums have songs that can be downloaded.

After all, they are in business, and they would prefer to make a little money, don't you think?

Whenever you see a song with an icon of a loudspeaker next to it, that means you can either listen or copy the song.

I must warn you now, that the recording of "ANNIE LAURIE" is messed up, and only plays halfway.

So, don't even bother with that one.

Some songs are in "wma" format, and other songs are in "asf" format.

So make sure your computer's media player is set to play those.

To listen to songs on the web sites, just left click on the icon with your mouse.

If you want to copy the song, then RIGHT click with your mouse, and select "SAVE TARGET AS" from the pop up menu.

At this point, before clicking the "SAVE" button, you may want to rename the file, which is what I do, so it's easier to recognize.

Also, instead of merely saving everything to the "MY DOCUMENTS" folder or the "MUSIC" folder, I recommend creating new folders, and naming them, "GLASGOW PHOENIX CHOIR" and "MARGARET DONALDSON".

That's how I did it.

Nifty, huh?

Thank you.

Where The Deer Play

Greetings and Salutations to All my Kith and Kin and All the Ships in Outer Space:

I've become increasingly reclusive, and today, I left my room for the first time in a couple of weeks.

Since it has gotten colder outside, I felt it necessary to start the engine on my pickup truck, and even to drive it around the grounds, just to keep everything in working order.

I've lived here at the Ol' Soldiers' Home, off and on, for several years now.

I've been all over the grounds, and am familiar with all the wildlife, - - - or so I thought.

I've seen the raccoons, oppossum, foxes, rabbits, squirrels, pigeons, geese, swans, ducks, and feral cats.

Other residents had told me there were deer on the grounds, but I thought they were joking, and never believed it.

After all, we're located in the very heart of the District of Columbia megalopolis, and the Ol' Soldiers' Home is completely fenced in, and regularly patrolled.

Shucky darn and gosh gee whillikers, I've lived here for years, and NEVER seen any deer.

But, today, while driving around in my pickup truck, I saw a whole HERD of deer!

There was a nice looking buck with a respectable set of antlers, and several does and fawns.

When I went to chow and told others about the deer, one of the individuals indicated the administration here at the Ol' Soldiers' Home is planning to remove all animals from this property.

That's because they've sold off a bunch of our land to developers who will build condominums and embassies, which will completely obstruct our scenic view of the Capitol dome and the Washington Monument.

I wonder if there's a way to use the plight of the deer herd and other wildlife to block this effort?

Doesn't the law require developers and the Soldiers' Home administrators to file an Environmental Impact Statement?

I wonder if there's some way we can organize a grass roots protest movement?

Who would we contact for legal assistance?

They've done so much to destroy the quality of life here at the Ol' Soldiers' Home.

Wouldn't it be great if'n we could figure out a way to turn things around?

Thank you.

SEARCHING FOR CHILDREN OF CULLODEN

********************************
********************************
Mo Cinneadh:

Here is a news article I just now read, although it's a few days old, at least.

I first saw it posted in THE BLOOD IS STRONG discussion forum, and copied it from THE SCOTSMAN newspaper's web site.

You will notice that Henderson is prominently featured.

Therefore, Henderson children have a special interest in getting involved in this project.

One or more of them might be going to Scotland, all expenses paid.

GLOBAL SEARCH FOR THE CHILDREN OF CULLODEN

By John Ross

It was a brutal conflict that changed the course of history, pitching Scot against Scot, clan against clan and brother against brother.

The Battle of Culloden in Seventeen Forty-Six ended the attempt by the Jacobite army to reclaim the British throne for a Catholic, Stuart king.

Its aftermath led to the "pacification" of the Highlands, and the dismantling of a way of life with estates seized, and kilts and tartan banned.

The campaign accelerated emigration from the area and the setting up of new colonies in the United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Now the National Trust for Scotland, the guardians of the battlefield, have launched a global search for young people whose ancestors fought on either side of the conflict.

The National Trust for Scotland wants to encourage youngsters to research their family trees to find out if any are related to the soldiers who fought for Prince Charles Edward Stuart, or the government troops, led by the Duke of Cumberland.

The aim is to find two direct descendants to help officially open a new nine and a half million pound Visitor Centre at Culloden on 16 April 2008, the anniversary of the battle.

Alexander Bennett, the trust's project coordinator, said:

"The myth that Culloden was a conflict between England and Scotland is still alive today.

"In fact, many Scots fought with the government troops and some families had members who fought on opposing sides, often against their will.

"The Battle of Culloden signalled the end of the clan system and contributed to the exodus of many Highlanders to the New World where they played a significant role in the creation and development of the United States of America, Australia, and Canada.

"We think it's very important that the descendants of those who fought on either side should help us officially open the new centre."

Mister Bennett said he hopes to uncover children with a direct line to the battle, but not necessarily the leading players.

"It's more to do with the process rather than who the ancestor was.

It's not as if we are looking for a direct descendant of the prince.

"It would be nice if we could have someone from both sides, just ordinary, everyday people."

The names of soldiers on the Prince's side included Cameron, Macleod, Maclean, Farquharson, Chattan, Fraser and Stewart, while among the government troops were Monro, Campbell, Price, Cholmondely, Bligh, Semphill and Flemming.

"There will be some obvious direct descendants from, say, the clan chiefs, but that's not quite what we are looking for," said Mister Bennett.

"It's more for children who want to get involved in research.

"It would be great if we get someone from Canada, or Australia as that is the diaspora and they are extremely proud of their ancestry."

The project is open to school-age children who have until 19 March 2008 to submit their family trees.

These will then be scrutinised and authenticated by a panel of judges, including Doctor Nick Barratt from the television genealogy series, WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

Doctor Barratt said:

"This is an opportunity for generations to come together and explore their shared past.

"Family trees are the gateway to history.

"There is something very exciting about seeing past events through ancestors' lives."

Nellie Leitch, who lives in Culloden, spent thirty years investigating her family connections to the battle and discovered her great grandfather three times removed, Roderick MacKenzie, fought with the Life Guards on the Jacobite side.

He survived the fighting and was among those who helped Prince Charles Edward Stuart escape.

Government troops caught and shot Mister MacKenzie and beheaded him, mistaking him for the prince.

His head was taken to London and put on display for a month before the mistake was realised.

David Henderson, of Farr, near Inverness, is able to trace his family to an Andrew Henderson, who was an eyewitness at the battle, working as an early war reporter on the government side.

Born in Roxburghe in February of Seventeen Seventeen, Mister Henderson wrote a book about the conflict, a copy of which is now at the Culloden Visitor Centre.

National Moment of Remembrance

Greetings and Salutations to All my Kith and Kin and All the Ships in Outer Space:
I just now learned of our National Moment of Remembrance.
It occurs at 1500 Hours on Memorial Day.
What a wonderful idea!
Ah, but I just remembered something.
Maybe this ain't such a good idea, after all.
WHEN, exactly, is Memorial Day?
For me, Memorial Day will always be the traditional date, 30 May.
But, what date is our government observing?
Do they expect me to go along with it?
Not hardly!
Why does our government have to go and ruin things like that?
It's bad enough that the damn Yankees plagiarized the custom of Decoration Day originally instituted by the poor grieving widows, mothers, and daughters of the Confederate States of America!
Anyway, maybe you all might want to participate in this effort.
I registered at the web site, downloaded the counter, and embedded it into my blog.
At that same web site, I also downloaded a poster, an official announcement, and an audio file of a bugler sounding "Taps", complete with drum roll.
One of the things they do is to present gold medals to the children of soldiers killed in action.
You should see the photographs of the poor little ones with their medals.
They are touchingly heart-wrenching.
Sure, they like the medals (I think), but they'd rather have their daddy.
One of the links on that web site is an effort to restore Memorial Day to its traditional date.
So, I reckon I ain't the only one who's upset about it.
Will our National Moment of Remembrance be on Memorial Day, or will it be some other day?
They say if you have a bell, you should ring it to observe that moment.
Do you reckon we ought to get started writing, calling, and visiting our Senators and Representatives to urge them to restore the traditional date of Memorial Day, so we can all be united this year in observing our National Moment of Remembrance?
Thank you.
