"AS OTHERS SEE US"

Greetings to All my Kith and Kin and All the Ships in Outer Space:

Here is an amusing item I love to refer to and share.

**********
(Seen at the annual CELTIC FESTIVAL AND HIGHLAND GAMES OF SOUTHERN MARYLAND):

"AS OTHERS SEE US"

First, there were the Scots,
Who kept the Sabbath,
And everything else
They could get their hands on.

Next, there were the Welsh,
Who prayed on their knees
And preyed on their neighbors.

Then, there were the Irish,
Who weren't exactly sure
What they wanted.
But, they were ready
To fight for it anyway.

Finally, there were the English,
Who considered themselves
A self-made people,
Thus relieving the Almighty
Of a dreadful responsibility!

How To Post Your Comments

Greetings to All my Kith and Kin and All the Ships in Outer Space:

I received an inquiry from an old friend, wanting to know how to respond to my postings on this web log.

It's really simple.

Just look at the very bottom of each message, and click on the word, "COMMENTS".

That will open up a window which will allow you to type in your own thoughts, thus creating a two way discussion between thee and me.

Thank you.

Memorial Day

Greetings to All my Kith and Kin and All the Ships in Outer Space:

I slept through most of today, forcing myself to wake just in time for supper.

After chow, Michael George, a good buddy here at the Old Soldiers' Home permitted me to use his computer to link my blog to my personal web site, and also work a few good crossword puzzles, a special treat, since the public computers provided for the residents of the Old Soldiers' Home are not properly installed or set up, and so I'm unable to access my favorite crossword puzzles or edit my own personal web site.

Anyway, I was up all last night, listening to one of my favorite radio programs, COAST TO COAST AM, being hosted by Art Bell, himself (a REALLY special treat, as he has mostly retired).

It is an all-night talk radio program, focusing on unexplained phenomena, and last night's program was devoted to UFO sightings in the former Soviet Union.

So, what was your day like?

Did you "celebrate"?

A friend of mine, now deceased, once pointed out something important to remember about our precious heritage.

Memorial Day is NOT the same as Veterans Day!

We don't "celebrate" Memorial Day - - - we solemnly observe it.

Furthermore, Memorial Day is a MILITARY occasion, a day reserved for paying special homage to our MILITARY dead, not for putting flowers on Great Aunt Gertrude's grave, something which can be done on any of the other three hundred and sixty-four days of the year.

Memorial Day is for the dead, but Veterans Day is for the living.

Veterans Day is the appropriate time for parades and celebrations, not Memorial Day.

I think those are important distinctions, which unfortunately, have now become almost universally overlooked.

Also, let's give credit where credit is due.

History is written by those who won the war, and thus, General John Alexander Logan, a Union Army general during the War Between the States, who is buried in the National Cemetery here at the Old Soldiers' Home, gets credit for creating "Decoration Day", which later became Memorial Day.

But, he got the idea from observing the CONFEDERATE custom of decorating military gravesites.

Thank you.

Greetings to All my Kith and Kin and All the Ships in Outer Space:

My youngest sister, Kate, who lives in Zebulon, North Carolina with her husband, Art Palmer, suggested I create a web log.

This is new to me, but I think it will be useful.

It will certainly prove a boon to all the folks I've been e-mailing, for it means I won't be unnecessarily disturbing them with my unpopular personal opinions.

Instead, I can post my treasonous "politically incorrect" rants HERE, to be closely monitored by ECHELON, a function of the National Security Agency, and CARNIVORE, a function of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

I am a little handicapped in my abilities to post, because I am forced by circumstances to use the public computers provided for residents at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C., and these computers were not set up properly.

There's a lot to write about, but because time is short, and other people want to use this computer, I'll have to quit now.

But, look for my future posts, and if there are responses, maybe some discussion, on a variety of subjects, to include religion, politics, heritage, memories, creative writing, and personal experiences.

Thank you.
