When not using my cell phone, I just turn it off.
When I decide to turn it on again, any Voice Mail or Text Messages that were received while the cell phone was shut off will still appear, so I haven't missed anything.
Of course, when shopping at Wal-Mart, or when driving my pickup truck, I leave the cell phone turned on and wear my Blue Tooth in my ear, in case there's an emergency requiring a 911 call.
Also, I keep an extra battery in a charger, plus, I have a third battery stored away that's still in its plastic wrapper.
But, that third battery, being brand spanking new, and therefore, never used, has to be fully charged before it can be used.
Nifty stuff, huh?
