VISITING MY PARENT'S GRAVES

A few days ago, I drove down to Spring Lake, North Carolina to visit Mama's and Daddy's graves in Riverview Memorial Gardens.

I stopped at the Wal-Mart store and bought red flowers and an American flag to decorate the graves.

The yellow flowers had been placed there several days earlier by my stepmother, Alma Capps Mallernee, who lives in nearby Fayetteville, and the small United States flag was probably placed there (by the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post?) on Memorial Day.

The teddy bear with one eye missing was a Christmas gift that my sister, Suzy, had given me, and the books are children's novels that she wrote.

As soldiers in the United States Army, my father and I both served in the One Hundred and First Airborne Division, and when we were in Korea, we both served in the Eighth Army, so I put those unit insignia shoulder patches on his grave marker.

Then, I played my guitar and sang a few songs for them.
